Some owners of stud dogs often utilize a written agreement that specifies the conditions under which the breeding will take place. It is the responsibility of the owner of the bitch to review the terms and sign the contract if they find them acceptable.
 
Both parties keep a copy of the contract, and the owner of the bitch should also obtain a copy of the stud’s pedigree. Below are some typical elements that are generally found in most stud contracts.

STANDARD TERMS

The contract outlines the specific stud to be utilized along with his registration number, and it also includes the name and registration number of the bitch in the document.
 
A predetermined fee is paid by the owner of the bitch to the owner of the stud. This fee compensates the stud dog for his services, but it does not guarantee that the bitch will become pregnant. The fee amount is set by the owner of the stud dog and is detailed in the contract. Typically, the fee ranges from $500.00 to $750.00, depending on the number of champions that a particular stud has sired. Some breeders may charge a stud fee equivalent to the price of a single puppy.
 
In exchange for the fee, the stud will be available for use on the bitch for one, two, or potentially three breedings during the current heat cycle. The contract may also specify whether the breedings will occur naturally or through artificial insemination.
 
Additionally, some contracts provide space to document the actual breeding date(s), allowing the owner of the bitch to estimate the potential due date(s).

OPTIONAL TERMS

Certain stud owners are prepared to guarantee one or two live puppies at the time of birth. In such cases, they provide one repeat service at no additional cost if the initial breeding does not succeed.
 
If the prospective stud has not been previously utilized, some breeders may consent to forgo the fee to establish the stud as ‘proven’. This entails demonstrating his ability to produce a litter. Another alternative is that the stud fee is remitted after confirming the bitch’s pregnancy.
 
In certain instances, the stud owner might agree to accept the pick puppy from the litter instead of a monetary payment.
 
Occasionally, both parties reach a verbal agreement regarding the terms; however, it is generally advisable to document these terms for future reference.
